Electricity has been key to Calgary’s development and success. The city began generating electric power in 1905; by 1928, it stopped generating and began buying power for redistribution. Today, Enmax purchases electricity from the Alberta Electric System Operator.
The company includes several components. Enmax Power transmits and delivers electricity to Calgary and surrounding areas. Enmax Energy manages the business end of the business. And Enmax Envision provides fibre-optic network telecommunications solutions.
Enmax is a Caring Company, pledging to contribute a portion of its pre-tax profits to support its communities in a variety of ways, including support for pond hockey, school safety and environmental education.
The electricity distributed by Enmax is generated with clean and renewable resources, including hydroelectric power and wind generators, as well as with gas-powered generators. The company supports research that will lead to the development of additional sustainable sources of electric power.
